The emergency department is fully equipped with multi-lumen catheters, pulse oximetry, end-tidal CO2, doppler blood pressure machines, defibrillator, electrocardiograph machine and telemetry, supplemental oxygen, and a full in-house laboratory. Designed to prepare the intern for entrance into a residency program, or a high-quality private practice, the internship will expose the intern to a wide range of emergency and referral cases following the Veterinary Emergency Critical Care Society’s new Guidelines for Internships.

The interns will have hands-on diagnostic and treatment responsibility for cases, as well as be expected to learn all aspects of hospital procedures, including the management of cases, generating appropriate estimates, and communicating with owners and referring veterinarians. Inclusion in the business aspect of the practice is also encouraged for interested interns. The program includes approximately 40% of the time split amongst the specialties of surgery, internal medicine, ophthalmology and critical care, and 60% of the time in the emergency department. A senior clinician directly supervises most day shifts and several night and weekend shifts. Senior clinicians are always on-call to assist the over-night intern.

Patient rounds are performed in the mornings and afternoons, during which all hospitalized patients and interesting outpatients are discussed. Each intern is supported by an advisor and is evaluated regularly by the team in the areas of professional performance, communication skills, and progress in the pursuit of knowledge and clinical aptitude. The clinical departments at Vetcision work as a team, therefore, good group interaction and communications skills are essential for the intern’s success.

Opportunities for continuing education include, but are not limited to, cage-side patient rounds, sit-down patient rounds and a mandatory weekly lecture series designed specifically for the interns. There are journal club rounds and morbidity and mortality rounds at which interns are also expected to participate. Attendance at local veterinary association meetings is encouraged. A spay/neuter program, for area rescue groups, allow interns to develop and polish surgical skills in the Vetcision surgical suites. A library containing periodicals and current text books is in-house and available 24 hours a day, as well as on-line access to VIN and a variety of veterinary journals.

Research and public speaking are developed with monthly 10 minute PowerPoint presentations given by each intern on assigned topics, and critiqued by the senior staff. The interns will rotate teaching monthly Pet First Aid classes and other pet friendly lectures given to the general public in the Vetcision conference room. By the end of the program, each intern will be required to prepare a one hour formal presentation, on a medical topic of their choice, which will be presented to the entire staff.
